Regional Economic Award Winner: UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef
Chancellor Vanderhoef was appointed chancellor of the University of California, Davis in 1994. During his tenure, the campus was invited to a prestigious membership in the American Association of Universities; increased its extramural awards from $169.1 million to $586 million annually, earned a National Science Foundation (NSF) research funding ranking of 10th in the U.S. among public universities; increased private gifts from $40 million to more than $200 million a year, with more than $1 billion cumulatively raised in support of programs; expanded classroom, lab, clinical and office space by 4 million square feet; completed the transformation of an ailing county hospital to an academically distinguished and financially sound regional medical center; and made distinctive strides in recruiting a diverse and accomplished faculty and student body. Since 1994, student enrollment has grown from 22,000 to more than 30,000 and the number of faculty has increased 44 percent. He has received numerous awards, including being honored by the Sacramento Business Journal as one of the 20 people who have contributed most substantially to California’s capital region over the past 20 years.
Regional Social Equity Award Winner: Doni Blumenstock, Executive Director of the American Leadership Forum, Mountain Valley Chapter
Ms. Blumenstock is a nationally recognized expert on collaborative leadership, coalition building, and community development. For the past 12 years, she has served as the founding executive director of the Sacramento region chapter of the American Leadership Forum, a national organization dedicated to joining and strengthening leaders from business, government, neighborhood groups, organized labor, environmental, public health, faith-based organizations, and beyond. Each year the organization invites 25 established leaders representing diverse professions and ethnic groups from Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado, Placer and Northern Solano counties to participate in a year-long Fellows program. This 20 day commitment covers monthly seminars on topics such as understanding differences, ethics, systems theory, collaborative leadership, and dialogue.
Regional Environmental Award Winner: Shawn Harrison, Executive Director of Soil Born Farms
Mr. Harrison is the co-founder and executive director of Soil Born Farms, an urban agriculture and education project serving the Greater Sacramento area. Through its urban farms and associated activities, Soil Born Farms allows youth and adults to discover and participate in a system of food production and distribution that promotes healthy living and nurtures the environment. Soil Born Farms is committed to developing programs focused on organic food production, healthy food education and access to healthy foods for everyone. Since its inception in 2000 Soil Born Farms has created and supported the development of five urban farms in Sacramento, piloted innovative food markets and farm stands, engaged thousands of area youth in hands-on farming and cooking activities, supported the development of school and community gardens and helped shape community awareness and support for responsible agriculture. Soil Born Farms conducts its work in partnership with a broad base of community partners including the Sacramento Natural Foods Coop, Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services, Health Education Council, California Native Plant Society, Community Alliance with Family Farmers and the California Endowment. Mr. Harrison has been directly involved in the development of sustainable food systems and healthier communities since 1993. Born and raised in Sacramento, Shawn continues to work and reside here with his wife and two daughters.
