Regional open space inventory

Are we effectively planning for – and protecting – regional open space lands in a way that ensures environmental health and sustainability and contributes to a vibrant economy and our overall quality of life?

To answer that question, Valley Vision is partnering with a group of regional environmental, business, planning and regulatory organizations to gather and develop important information about the status of our landscape.

With technical assistance from the Sacramento Area Council of Governments, Valley Vision is creating an up-to-date inventory and map of all regional lands that are currently protected for non-urban uses in El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba counties.  These lands include everything from preserved wildlife habitats and parks to protected farmland and floodplains, and will include some basic information about open space planning efforts at the county level.

Following this first-of-its-kind inventory, the partners and Valley Vision plan to work with a wide range of stakeholders – from local land-use and wildlife planners and conservation leaders to the development community and many others – to identify how best to address open space issues at a 6-county scale.

While specific action steps can’t be known at this time, a “regional conversation” about open space grounded in independent research and baseline data is vital to our region’s long-term environmental and economic health.
